You’ve done all the essential preparation for being a new puppy owner: you researched and asked questions about the right breed for you, you selected a responsible breeder to acquire your puppy from, puppy-proofed your home, and likely spent hours watching training tips on CKC.tv. Great job setting yourself up as a responsible dog owner!
You’re probably also wondering: How can something be so cute? Sorry to disappoint you, but we don’t have the answer to that one just yet. Puppies are simply adorable, and it’s easy to spoil them with extra cuddles, treats, and toys. That said, here are some common questions new puppy owners often have:
Why Doesn’t My Puppy Like Being Picked Up by My Kids?
Many children are unaware of the signals dogs give when they’re uncomfortable or trying to get away. When a puppy is picked up by children, they might feel forced into an uncomfortable or even painful position. If they continue to be held despite sending “please stop!” signals, they will likely remember the unpleasant experience and avoid being picked up again. It’s important to teach children how to recognize a dog’s body language and how to hold them properly (check out this helpful chart for understanding dog body language).
Is It Cruel to Leave My Puppy with Someone Else While I’m on Vacation?
As long as you trust the person caring for your puppy and provide them with food, a collar, leash, and chew toys, your puppy will be fine. They will be excited to see you when you return! (Here’s a list of items to provide to your pet sitter.)
Why Does My Puppy Attack My Clothes When I Get Dressed?
It seems like your puppy is trying to get your attention and start a game. If they do this again, don’t engage with them. If you push them away or chase them, they’ll think you’re playing along. Instead, calmly and quietly place your puppy in their crate or another room until you’re finished getting dressed. Afterward, let them out and leave the room. With consistent practice, your puppy will learn that getting dressed is not a time for play.
What Do I Do If My Cat Doesn’t Like My New Puppy?
Don’t let your puppy insist on playing with or chasing the cat. Since puppies don’t understand cats’ body language, it’s important for you to intervene on the cat’s behalf. Give your cat and puppy time and space to adjust to each other, and supervise their interactions until they feel comfortable.
The Vet Said Not to Take My Puppy Outside, But Now They Have to Go Potty!
It’s okay to take your puppy outside for potty breaks, but until they have received their final vaccinations, avoid areas frequented by other dogs. If possible, carry your puppy outside to reduce their exposure to germs. Follow your vet’s instructions to ensure your puppy’s safety while they’re still in the vaccination phase.
